3 ways to be kind to your lips during chapped lip season

Did you know the skin on our lips is much thinner than the skin on other parts of our body?

Our lips see a lot of action everyday -- from eating to wearing lipstick to the dry office air you didn’t know was sucking the life out of them. The skin on our lips are super thin, sensitive and don’t have any sebum or sweat glands which keep them happy and protected. Think of lips like a sponge: with moisture, they absorb water and look plump and healthy, but when dehydrated, they get dry and shrink. That’s why with age our lips will begin to show fine lines and wrinkles.

Try these 3 easy ways to keep lips hydrated, protected and kissable.

  1. Choose moisturizing ingredients

Ingredient lists can be daunting (we feel you), but look out for some of the good guys that will moisturize your lips

Shea butter has a ton of vitamins and fatty acids that make it seriously nourishing and helps protect the skin’s natural oils. It’s also an emollient, which means it helps form a barrier on the lips to retain moisture.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant you should look for in your fave lip products. It boosts circulation and can help generate new skin cells, which will make your lips softer. Vitamin E also aids the penetration and retention of the other beneficial ingredients in your products.

Cocoa seed butter (no, not chocolate) hydrates the skin deeply to moisturize lips. It is high in antioxidants and fatty acids. It will also protect your skin from damage to keep lips looking youthful and healthy.

We love a good multi-tasker like the Evio Hydrating Lip Gloss that is packed with shea butter and cocoa seed butter to hydrate lips and give you high shine without stickiness. We’re also super into a do-it-all salve like Glossier’s Balm Dotcom.

  1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

But only when you need to, like once a week. It’s good to refresh lips to remove excess skin cells that causes build up and restore shine, softness and smoothness. This will also help to make lipstick or gloss look better and last longer.

Massage lips with a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water, try these homemade lip scrubs with ingredients you probably have in the pantry or this heavenly Coconut Lip Scrub by Niu Body.

  1. Don’t forget SPF

We’re all trying to live our best lives, applying sunscreen even in the winter, but are you remembering your lips? Lips have very little melanin, which is the pigment that helps shield skin from the sun AKA lips need extra protection from aging and the damaging effects of UV rays...so don’t sleep on SPF for your lips.

Cruelty free, vegan lip balm with SPF is hard to come by which is why we love the Sun Bum SPF Lip Balm collection, plus they have so many flavors everyone can find a fave, and the Coola Tinted Lip Balm.
