7 Strategies Women Can Use To Thrive At Work

Women are continuously taking measures to avoid being marginalized in the workforce, whether as an employee or entrepreneur. Women are choosing to be bold, stand up for their rights and speak up where necessary.

We are also learning about the value of supporting and collaborating with other women to help each other thrive in our careers. Here are a few tips to help you do just that:



More often than not, your employer or competitor is too busy managing the affairs of the organization and might not allocate a project suitable for you or know your exact goals. Don’t ever feel uncomfortable to vocalize the opportunities you want. Over time, we’ve come to realize that men are more open to expressing their interests. If you see an opportunity, speak up!



Unfortunately, women are often stereotyped as being “too emotional.” Don’t let these stereotypes define you but instead, when you can, try to avoid being emotional in the workplace.

If someone says something offensive to you, attempt to speak with them about it in a professional way. If you’re uncertain how to go about this, consult a mentor, friend and/or colleague. If the behaviour continues, it’s always recommended that you bring it to the attention of HR.



If you are invited to an after-work hangout with your colleagues, take advantage of the opportunity! It’s the perfect chance for you get to know them on a more personal level. Most people are much more relaxed outside the work environment and you might be able to discuss opportunities that may be of interest to you. If you’re an entrepreneur, this is a valuable way to make great friendships that will help grow your business/connections.



Never compare your journey in your field of work with that of another person. This may appear easier said than done, but the most important factor is to keep striving to realize that your journey is unique and tells a story. We all have different paths in life, rather work hard and learn from any failure you might encounter during the course of your career. Have a to-do list for each day of the week, play to your strengths and work on your weaknesses. This will help you a great deal in making the most out of each day and improve your productivity.



A lack of confidence usually comes from a standpoint of self-doubt. If this is the case, before your next meeting, ensure you do your research and prepare well enough for any possible questions. If you’re unsure of something, ask questions. What’s the worst that could happen? Leverage your strengths rather than focusing on your weakness.

But, perhaps an upgrade to your wardrobe is all you need! Not only does dressing well for work improve your productivity, it gives you a huge boost in confidence too! Maybe it’s as simple as adding in a new suit or you may consider a complete overhaul of your wardrobe.

Whatever the cause of your low confidence is, work towards a solution so that it does not affect your career opportunities.



Many women are scared to take risks because of uncertainties but remember that you never know until you try! Go ahead and sell an idea to your boss. Go to that conference. Offer to take the lead on a project. Learn to negotiate and ask for a raise. Put your best foot forward because if you don’t someone else will!



Don’t think that you can always do everything all alone. We all need help at some point in our lives. If you need help with something at work, speak to someone in a better position to be of assistance.  If you need help at home, hire a nanny to babysit your kids for a few hours. If you are too stressed, eat out. If you need business advice, speak to an entrepreneur or mentor in a similar industry as yours. It won’t hurt you to take the steam off your shoulder every once in a while. You deserve it!
