I have Endometriosis. Endometriosis affects 10% of women globally, or 176 million women worldwide. According to Endometriosis.org, “endo” occurs when tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus (called “the endometrium”), is found outside the uterus, where it induces a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in scar tissue. I was also recently diagnosed with Adenomyosis, which is a condition in which the inner lining of the uterus breaks through the muscle wall of the uterus.
Dealing with Endometriosis is a complete battle. I, and many like me who struggle with it, live with severe cramps, heavy periods that leave us anemic, severe lower back pain, painful sex that leave both us and our partners concerned or in tears, a lowered chance of conceiving children, bloating, fatigue, and I personally have a permanent attachment to my trusty hot pack, which leaves people in a constant state of confusion.
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF "ENDO" ARE REAL
Women with Endometriosis have high levels of depression and anxiety. For me, that stems from the physical pain I endure, coupled with the fact that conceiving children is unlikely. Not to mention the bloating! I can have the strictest diet and exercise regimen, but when my stomach bloats from my insides flaring up I look three months pregnant.
It's almost a regular occurrence for ladies at the grocery store to ask me excitedly, "Are you expecting?!" to which I'm forced to reply with a forced smile "...No." What they don't know is that my scar tissue is most likely rendering me infertile, and she just struck a huge nerve. My point is here is that I am no stranger to panic attacks or feelings of sadness where I cannot eat or get out of bed.
I've struggled with pain management for years because it is a crucial step in ever hoping for a semi-normal life. I have been prescribed 800 mg ibuprofen for over a decade, but recently I've become concerned about what taking those frequently will do to my insides. My heavy usage of ibuprofen has side effects that include stomach and kidney troubles and lately, I kid you not (no pun intended), my kidneys have started hurting.
WHEN I HEARD ABOUT INGESTIBLE HEMP OIL FROM MY ENDO GROUP, I WAS INTRIGUED, SINCE IT'S KNOWN TO HELP WITH PAIN, INFLAMMATION, AND MOOD.
Think of hemp as marijuana's cousin, which contains cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive element found in both plants. It's referred to as a “miracle compound,” and has been shown to help with ailments including chronic pain, PMS symptoms, anxiety, and depression. I decided to try Hempsvision Hemp Oil, a CBD-rich oil.
Okay, so I take the recommended 15 drops and let it sit under my tongue for maximum benefits. I was expecting to taste something very bitter and was sort of dreading it as I took it this morning on an empty stomach. However, I was surprised that the taste was delicate with an aftertaste similar to olive oil. About 15 minutes in I could start to feel...something. Almost like a sort of calm. For someone whose mind races with at least 100 thoughts every 30 seconds this is a big deal. As I sat here and started brainstorming this article I felt very grounded. The effect was similar to having a few sips of wine or a very strong chamomile tea. No buzz or feeling of drunkenness or of being stoned, just a calm focus.
I did not notice a change in my pain level until around an hour later close to 11 a.m. I am usually hard pressed to sit for a long time without feeling like there is a jackhammer drilling into my spine and uterus, but in my work meeting I found my pain level went from a solid 7 (feeling mind-numbing cramps in waves and severe back pain) to probably a 4: feeling a great deal more comfortable with no sharp pains. That is a sensation typically reserved for after 2-3 800 mg ibuprofen. It is now past 2pm, and I’m so excited to say that my pain level is still very low.
Although it did take some time to kick in, I do think this could be an amazing alternative to pharmaceutical painkillers. For my fellow women with Endometriosis or similar conditions, I do suggest upping the dosage for maximum pain erasing benefits. In hindsight, I think I could have benefitted more fully from 20-25 drops.
For those without a chronic condition who are just using for normal menstrual cramps or muscle soreness, the 15 drops should work well. The other thing I love about this product is the longevity of the effects. Typically taking an 800 mg ibuprofen gets rid of my pain for two hours max, while here 15 drops of oil have helped me manage my pain for almost 4 hours. Double the amount of time. Plus I think my kidneys are probably smiling at me for giving them a much-needed break! It feels good knowing that today (for once) I took zero painkillers and am doing something plant-based and natural that won't further hurt my body.
