Combat Winter Weather With These Eco-Friendly Beauty Products

Oh the weather outside is… pretty frightful actually. But changing your beauty routine can be so delightful! With winter comes different challenges for your skin, hair, and nails. Our list of eco-friendly and cruelty-free products will help you tackle winter’s harsh winds and low temperatures, and all the other dehydrating things that come along with the Canadian chill.

Chapped lips are the best, said nobody, ever. Luckily Eco Lips has developed an organic lip scrub made with fair trade sugar, coconut, olive and jojoba oil to make those lips kissably smooth. In between scrubs, remember to apply moisture to your lips throughout the day. One of BKIND’s and handmade flavoured lip balms will do the trick! Or you can lean on drugstore staple Eos, who just announced they’ll be collaborating with TerraCycle on a new recycling program that will turn your Eos lip balm packages in park benches, picnic tables and even bike racks.

Make your bath time routine winter-friendly with Urban Alchemist’s Coconut Bath Soak. The three ingredient bath soak is so moisturizing that there’s no need for lotion — although imagine how soft your skin would be after applying your fave body balm! If you’re more into a steamy shower and need a good body lotion, B.C. brand The Green Kiss has you covered with their line of organic, vegan and gluten-free natural body lotions. They have fabulous scents such as Honey Almondand Blood Orange.

Dry skin, fraying cuticles, and brittle nails can be a real problem this time of year and unfortunately, our pockets and mittens do little to protect hands from the dry and freezing weather. Dr. Organics Manuka Honey Hand and Nail cream is an organic and cruelty-free product that moisturizes with ingredients like honey and vitamin E. For a little extra nail protection, you can try Dr. Haushka’s organic Neem Nail & Cuticle Oil.

As the season's change, so should your cleanser. Since typically the skin isn’t as oily in summer as it is in winter, a moisturizing cleanser is ideal to keep your face clean, without over drying (which will cause your body to make MORE oil — not cute). Try Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration Cream Cleanser for something that will get rid of the nasties on your face without turning your complexion into a parched desert.

Most beauty obsessives know that après cleanse, applying a face cream is key. Canadian brand Province and Apothecary’s Protecting + Restoring Face Balm is formulated with Canadian beeswax and oils that help replenish and retain moisture, such as broccoli oil and sea buckthorn oil. Next time a gust of cold air hits, you’ll know your visage is well guarded.

Sheet masks are notorious for restoring moisture to the skin especially during winter seasons, but they’re also infamous for the damage they do to the environment. Enature’s sheet masks give you the option to be gorgeous and environmentally-friendly with their moisturizing sheet masks made of skin-felt. The material is not only eco-friendly and biodegradable, it also sticks better to your face, meaning the product will be able to penetrate the skin better — bonus points all around.

Like skin, your tresses are also extremely susceptible to winter’s bite. To avoid dry hair and breaking end’s, Lush’s R&B is made with cupacua butter and avocado, and it can be applied as needed to help frizzy, dry hair — it also smells great! Need something more intense? To bump up the hydration try one of Lush’s hot oil hair treatments to moisturize, revitalize and protect hair. There are various treatments for all of your hair needs but Damaged (ingredients include avocado oil, olive oil, and almond oil) is effective for super thirsty locks.

If you’re a “two birds one stone kind” of individual, there are a few products that pull multi-duty. The Ordinary’s 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil can be used on the face and hair, though users have reported that it works fantastically on the knees and rest of the body as well. BYIB’s Babe Balm is a natural beauty balm for use all over the body, but it also can be used as a gentle cleanser and makeup remover, as a night treatment, and as natural highlighter. Not only that, but Babe Balm is completely vegan. Or check out Canadian brand Céla’s ultra-nourishing Essential Balm, which contains the brand’s proprietary blend of Canuck-grown super-ingredients, as well as the relaxing scents of lavender and bergamot.
