One way or another, this pandemic pushed us towards mindfulness, thoughtfulness, awareness, you name it. As a life-threatening situation, it made us delve more into the human condition, all the risks we are facing on this planet, and how much responsibility we take for these. We feel now more willing to redesign our lives and become conscious of how our actions, decisions, and attitude affect others. In this general climate of introspection and collectivity, getting back-to-normal might turn into a much more sophisticated game. I’m already scratching my head trying to figure out what to gift my friends and family this season. I think that gifting is getting way more personal, revolving around items that look good and carry a special meaning. Urging people to stay safe and take care of themselves is a great message. But what is even more profound is reminding them that we depend on our environment, the natural resources within it, and the “green beauty” surrounding us. Brands that are committed to sustainability and conscious choices are already paving the way. Are you ready to support them? Evolving, changing, and reevaluating is quite a process, but at this point, I might take the plunge and see what happens!
BEING CONSCIOUS 🌾
As a fashion & beauty industry insider, I’m always tempted to shop for my friends the ‘latest’ and the ‘bestsellers.’ I’m experienced and, naturally, a fast shopper. Shifting away from my not-so-thoughtful past to embrace a conscious element, means that I’m slowing down, dedicating a little more time to each of my wishlist items, and allowing them to enjoy their ride to the shopping cart and checkout button. Thankfully, more and more companies – like Canadian Kotn – offer sustainable options. We don’t need to be experts in terminology; I’m not. But we can do our research. With all the restrictions and lockdowns on a global scale, many of us are expected to shop online, plus quite many are working from home, which adds a bit more flexibility to our daily schedules. It might be our chance to browse more before we get to buy our holiday gifts.
ON MY WISHLIST ✨
I used to gift cute things, those aesthetically pleasing. Now I feel the need to go deeper than the dazzling surface, checking brand profiles, and hoping to find ‘honest’ products. Something artisanal or ethically manufactured, for example, a product made of natural or recycled materials – its manufacturing process not having a toll on the environment – a slow-fashion item or cruelty-free cosmetics made with organic ingredients, something a little “extra,” for 2020. More than ever before, I’m excited to share my favorites!
Evio 3-Step Skin Set. It is all you need for a complete skincare routine, checking all the conscious-beauty boxes at once as a cruelty-free, vegan, gluten-free, toxin-free, paraben-free, ethically produced system of three rejuvenating, nourishing, and hydrating products. Their star-ingredient, Cannabis Sativa or hemp seed oil, is packed with antioxidants and natural fatty acids that protect skin from environmental aggressors and premature aging. The set includes hemp-cloth cleansing wipes, a 2-in-1 mask that doubles as wash-off treatment and overnight moisturizer, and a serum containing a unique blend of 8 clean plant-based oils and extracts to even, brighten, and moisturize. It will motivate your loved ones to stick to a daily beauty ritual that gives them joy.
Tata Harper Maskne Fighting Set. In response to the emerging issue of mask-related acne, Tata collaborated with fashion designer Jonathan Simkhai to create a silk mask set paired with the Clear Skin Kit's potent formulas for an acne-free complexion. The Clarifying Cleanser, Mask, Moisturizer, and Spot Solution reduce irritation and retain moisture. All ingredients are organic, hand-picked, and free of synthetic chemicals while the silk mask reduces friction, an excellent gift for chic mask-wearers.
Mauli – At Home Yoga Set. Based on all-natural and organic sense-teasing blends, this set recreates the yoga studio experience at home. Quarantined on not, more people are trying yoga lately. An essential oil candle, a body oil, and the brand’s hand-loomed meditation shawl will help you decompress. They are inspired by holistic ayurvedic practices as rediscovered by the British-born Indian founders. All products are free from synthetic fragrances, parabens, mineral oils, palm oil, silicones, sulfates, propylene glycol, phthalates, animal testing, and more. Recyclable and reusable packaging is making them even more irresistible.
Poppy Finch XO Bracelet. This fine jewelry piece is elegant and discreet, ideal for the holiday season, a protective charm or gift of love. Sustainably handcrafted and made-to-order in Vancouver of ethically-sourced recycled gold, it is a ‘responsible’ touch of luxury.
Veja SDU RT B-Mesh Sneakers. Featuring mesh made of three upcycled plastic bottles, vegan suede panels, recycled polyester lining, wild rubber soles, and sugar cane midsoles, these eco-friendly shoes are an extra reason for people to get active – run and walk – during the pandemic.
Johnstons of Elgin EveryYarn Cashmere Scarf. This limited edition style in five winter-ready colors is made with excess yarn, using surplus cashmere fibers and breathing new life to production leftovers. Upcycled luxury, renewable materials from the Scottish mills, and zero-waste practices are in the brand’s DNA. This scarf will warm somebody’s heart!
Ettitude Bamboo Lyocell Sleep Shirt. Designed for stylish lounging – our pandemic norm – this long piped shirt is made of the brand’s proprietary silk-like, hypoallergenic, and thermo-regulating lyocell fabric. 100% organic pulp from bamboo - the most resource-efficient plant on the planet – is turned into fibers through a non-toxic closed-loop system that saves 98% of the water being used. Let’s take loungewear to the next level!
The Ethical Silk Company – Sleeping Beauty Set. Working from home has been a balancing act for many people. I spent more hours on the PC without even noticing it! Adequate, quality sleep is a necessity for hard workers. How else can you shine bright the next morning? These 100% eco-friendly mulberry silk hand-printed eye-masks and undyed pillows filled with organic cotton are keys to a night of beauty sleep. As a natural protein and a poor conductor of static electricity, silk prevents hair breakage. It also absorbs less of your night cream, allowing it to penetrate your skin, and protects you from wrinkling. A fresh face is guaranteed!
THINKING OF 2020… ⚡️
Over the last months, I’m looking for answers to countless questions related to “why we had to go through this,” but quite honestly, scientists themselves are rightfully clueless too. Probably the only course of action we are left with is working on “how we can improve our day-to-day” and emerge from this health crisis more resilient, efficient, and hopeful. Gifts – a small item or just wishes – sent to our loved ones are highly recommended this holiday season. Let’s give big smiles to our daily heroes, our family & friends. We – almost 8 billion people on earth – are fighting with the same enemy, and we will undoubtedly do our best to keep this energy going until we win!
