Going Pescatarian, Not Cold Turkey

We all talk about wanting to save our planet and becoming more green, but what does that mean?

Carpooling, riding your bike, recycling, planting trees? To me, the easiest and most effective way to help our wonderful planet was to stop eating meat. I know, I know, meat is delicious. Growing up in a Korean household, I know this too well (helloooo Korean BBQ!).

So how does reducing my meat intake reduce my environmental footprint? The production of meat - more specifically red meat - contributes to rising temperatures due to greenhouse gasses, the mismanagement of Earth’s resources and the destruction of water supplies. Did you know that it takes over 15,000 litres of water to produce just 1kg of beef?! Not only is meat harmful to the environment, it also poses several serious long-term risks to your health. Cancer, heart disease, and kidney failure, to name a few.

The decision to become a pescatarian started with a lot of research. I read a lot of articles and watched a few documentaries about the food industry. I wanted to make sure I was well-educated in my decision so when anyone asked, “Why don’t you eat meat?” I could give them an informative answer. Cutting red and white meat out of diet was my own way of helping the environment and my body. This is just my opinion and I’m not going to tell you what’s best for you - that’s for YOU to decide.

If you are looking to make the switch, here are a few quick tips on cutting meat out of your diet:

  • Don’t go cold-turkey (see what I did there 😉): try starting with Meatless Mondays or cutting out one meat product at a time
  • Find simple, vegetarian recipes to try
  • Explore vegetarian restaurants in your city! You’ll be surprised at how many options there are.
  • Cheat a little: I don’t mean eat meat, there are plenty of fake-meat options out there! Try some Ground Round in chili.

I’d love to hear if you’ve stopped eating meat or are thinking about cutting it out of your diet! Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.
