Ontario opened its cannabis lottery last week. Hopeful businesses entered their applications into a draw to become one of 25 cannabis stores to get legal licenses to operate a store. Reminder: when pot became legal in Canada on Oct. 17, each province and territory was given the go-ahead to determine how they wanted to actually sell pot. Some provinces only sell online. Others sell in brick-and-mortar stores and online. Ontario started off by only selling online, then decided to grant 25 retail licenses.
The government says this is temporary; a way to address the supply-demand issue. Provinces have been running out of cannabis quickly. Once the government can guarantee more cannabis, it will open more stores. Applications are open until 12 pm ET tomorrow and a random selection will take place on Friday. The first stores will open April 1st.
