Match Group, the company that owns dating services like Tinder, OkCupid, and PlentyOfFish, really wants to add Bumble to its roster. But it’s going after the dating app in an unconventional way – a lawsuit claiming Bumble ripped off Tinder.
What do you mean?
Bumble, a dating and professional matching service, works almost the same way as Tinder except women make the first move. Match Group is saying Bumble ripped off Tinder’s famous swipe left or right functionality (which helps users find the perfect match) and copied its display screen (which shows users their potential hookups). ICYMI: Bumble’s founder and CEO, Whitney Wolfe, was a co-founder of Tinder. She sued the company for sexual harassment and sexual discrimination in 2014. The lawsuit was quickly settled out of court. Last year, Match Group tried to buy Bumble for $450 million but Bumble said thanks but no thanks and swiped left. But Match is not taking no for an answer and could be using the recent lawsuit as a bargaining chip - take us up on the offer to go on a first date and we’ll make the lawsuit go away.
