Temi is a professional makeup artist and Founder of HerDay
WHAT IS YOUR MORNING ROUTINE?
I wake up between 7 am and 10 am every day and as soon as I open my eyes, I try not to go for my phone for at least 30 mins. I close my eyes, sit or lay still, and meditate on my gratefulness of life while repeating my signature affirmation. Then I get up to do some stretches to make my physiotherapist and massage therapist proud of me.
I cap off my morning routine by skimming through my emails/calls; checking my schedule for the day; creating a to-do list whilst drinking a cup of kombucha or French-pressed coffee – carpe diem.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER PATH
I am a professional makeup artist with the heart of a humanitarian, who is very passionate in regards to educating women about green beauty and how to holistically love themselves inwards and outwards. I am an advocate for women’s rights and empowerment. This led me to combine my acts of philanthropy and makeup artistry skills to create HERDAY – which allows me to curate a series of seasonal events that offers an opportunity for diverse groups of women to come together to feel uplifted and network genuinely in a fast-paced city. Teaching women that they can make an impact on our communities through the practice of self-love.
WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU OR WOMEN FACE IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
I am an African woman whose will is to break barriers in both the beauty and wellness industries. I personally try not to look at the challenges I face as a problem that cannot be solved, my mind is always set in the mode of adversity + resilience.
The one thing that could be improved in the wellness industry is intersectional mindfulness and feminism: “a concept that aims to progress society on an individual, even spiritual level while understanding our differences by taking into consideration individual’s Class, Race, Cultural Background, and other characteristics that make another individuals’ challenges ‘unique’.”
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG GIRLS WHO WANT TO BE THE NEXT YOU?
Start with love – love yourself unconditionally and spread love within your community. Be assertive. Always set your goals high and dream so big that it scares others. Never, ever let anyone project their fears unto to you and limit your mind.
HOW DO YOU SEPARATE WORK LIFE FROM YOUR PERSONAL LIFE?
I learned to say NO to social gatherings and jobs that don’t spark my fire. As an introverted social butterfly, I’ve learned to conserve my energy better over the past year. It was a hard lesson for me to learn – you must simply take a break, whether you want to or not. There’s no good in burning yourself out and not being able to enjoy the rewards of your hard work.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I inspire me – along with all the strong and vibrant women in life who have guided me in ways that they may not even be aware of.
WHEN YOU’RE OFF THE CLOCK, WHAT ARE YOUR INDULGENCES?
I am rarely off the clock but whenever I do force myself to take time off, I indulge in the simple pleasures like staying in to binge-watch my favorite Netflix shows, plan a road trip to somewhere with scenic views with a few friends or catching up with my loved ones.
