Is it even possible for something so incredibly 2000’s to make a comeback? Something so colourful and whimsical we thought only could exist in an era where fashion was rather questionable?
The answer is yes. Butterfly clips are coming back, and I have a few reasons why we should ALL be on board.
With 2020 being one of the darkest years any of us have had to face, I think it’s especially important to add brightly coloured things anywhere we can stick them. Perhaps that’s why they are coming back. Subconsciously we all need to lighten up, and what is lighter than a butterfly hairdo? Quite literally nothing.
My own passion for them actually resurfaced out of the Covid mask. My co workers laughed when I told them why I started sporting the fun little clips. It was in order to let people know I was approachable. My theory was, if they can’t see me smile, they can at least see that I’m bright and welcoming.
I’ve gotten pretty good at styling them by now, and let me tell you- they are down right fun to play with. I’m completely obsessed. With our expressions being covered (subtle reminder to please wear your mask), why not express with our hair?
"I ordered a big tub of them off of Amazon and trust me, it’s an inexpensive purchase for priceless childlike joy. When is the last time you played with your hair? Don’t you remember sticking them all over our heads? In mom’s hair if she’d let us? Heck even in Dad’s hair back when he had some! The point is, they are fun."

Now fun you say? What about fashion? I’m a grown woman! Well to that I say, yes you are, but when did that mean we couldn’t still take risks with our looks? I can think of 20 cute hairstyles right off hand that are elevated and brought to life with a pink butterfly clip. The best two styles so far have been using the clip as a decoy to take your eyes of my unwashed hair. Works like a charm. Pull your greasy hair into a big pony tail and add 3-4 clips at the section between hairline and pony. Absolutely adorable. Or, pull your hair down into that slicked low pony and add 1-2 butterflies an inch before the ear on either side. Really spices up the look. Greasy hair who? This is a gorgeous garden my friend.
There may have been a couple millennials questioning my taste as I continue to post my Butterfly clips on my social medias, but as I often here Rupauls Charles say on his podcast, “Someone turns 18 everyday”. Meaning fashion will always recycle, as there are people out there who didn’t get to grow up wearing mom jeans or really tiny sunglasses. That may be daunting to some, I know if you told me those early 2000 UGG boots would come back I may have to protest…But the fact of the matter is, vintage will always be cool. The only scary thing is that our generations iconic trends are now becoming vintage, and it maybe makes us feel old. To that I say, if you can’t beat them- join them. I can promise you with the butterfly clips- you will feel far from old, your inner child will take over. Also, who said you had to leave the house in them? Pour some wine, take some selfies, see how they feel.
Before buying the clips, I forgot what it was like to be 10 and over accessorizing. Grabbing any pretty thing and bringing it into the look. No, that was not fashion, but it was a creative outlet. I forgot the power of expressing myself through my hair. I moved into make up, better clothes, and a less adventurous mindset. It’s time to bring back the creativity. I’m not saying leave your house looking like a 13 year old, but I am saying, there is power to a lime green clip on your happiest days, and a purple clip on your girlies days. Don’t even get me started on the power of a blue clip. OR the quirky joy I get from wearing a green clip and a yellow one. The options are endless, the hairstyles are adorable, and the vibe is on point.
I invite you to join me in this one, colourful spot of 2020. It costs about $6 to join the butterfly club, and I’m fairly confident you will not regret that $6. You could buy a PSL with oat milk- or a bucket of fun this week. Your choice.
Either way, these babies are coming back, and with the darkness within 2020, I think it’s the perfect time.
