What’s your personal weed ritual?
My weed ritual has changed a lot over the last several years and I’ve incorporated weed more and more into my everyday life. In general, I roll joints and smoke them on my balcony or on walks after a long day’s work and when I just need some brain space to think. I also sometimes consume oil or capsules before I go to bed, which has been a real game-changer for my sleep. When I’m with friends and my team, a sesh in the park happens more often than not.
What I’ve also discovered is that I love pairing weed with activities, so now I sometimes consume before practicing yoga, when I binge watch tv on the weekends, or when I’m out for hikes.
The great thing with cannabis is that it is so personal and there is so much to try when figuring out what works best for you and your body. After so many years of consuming, I’m still learning about my mind and body, how I react to different products and how they can benefit me. It truly is a never ending journey.
What do you look for when buying cannabis?
Lots of things! First, there's the format – flower, pre-rolls, vaporizers, concentrates, edibles and topicals– and what’s missing in my stash that I want to restock on since I consume all categories. It’s really neat to see so many types of products that are now available. For example, when I’m shopping for edibles I can choose from chocolates, candies, cookies, beverages, and more.
After that, I look for effect and flavour. For effect, a lot of that has to do with cannabinoids – the compound that interacts with our endocannabinoid system. While there are numerous cannabinoids, notable ones are THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is generally associated with causing psychoactive effects, whereas CBD is generally known for providing benefits without the “head high”. For me, I have a pretty good tolerance for THC so I look for something that has more THC content, or something balanced that has roughly equal parts THC and CBD.
Beyond cannabinoids, I pay a lot of attention to flavour. In flower products, this means terpenes, which are the aromatic oils of the cannabis plant. Terpenes are what gives flower those cheesy, skunky, sour, citrus, and sweet aromas, and are what guides how it smells and tastes! The strains that I like are generally quite dominant in Caryophyllene and/or Pinene. When it comes to edibles, I stick to products that are formulated to taste fruity.
For people who aren’t familiar with these terms and attributes of cannabis products, it can seem complicated. But like anything else, it takes time to become informed and to gain that comfort with putting something in or on your body. And a lot of the time, it simply depends on my mood or what catches my eye, which is kind of how I shop for other things!
For the canna-curious, what are your tips on how they can incorporate cannabis into their own rituals?
- Visit your local retailer and chat with a budtender. They are there to help guide you through what products are available, understand the percentage of THC/CBD, explain what terpenes are in the product, or help you understand how you can incorporate cannabis into an activity.
- Explore different formats of cannabis products at home and see how you can pair cannabis with something you love doing. For instance, if you are looking for a no-fuss approach to elevating your bubble bath, a vape.
- When consuming, start low and go slow. Wait at least 1.5-2 hours before consuming another piece of chocolate or smoking another pre-roll. Not all formats have the same onset time.
- Keep notes on what you liked or didn’t like about the products you tried. Keep an open mind about how you react to products, be patient with yourself, and don’t be afraid to explore a little!
What are some basic accessories people should get if they want to start consuming flower?
The best things come in 3 - if you want to roll a joint, you’ll need papers, a grinder, and lighter (and of course, weed!).
Current favourite cannabis products?
This is so tough! I love trying new and different products all the time and have many favourites. I would say that my current go-tos are: Pedro Sweet Sativa or Glueberry OG for flower, Strawberry Fire OG pre-rolls, and Houseplant Grapefruit beverage.
